Outsourcing and packaging of IV drugs in flexible bags

From production to release of the finished product, CMOs offer their expertise throughout the manufacturing process of an injectable medicine. The packaging stage is tricky and involves specific technologies and expertise. CMOs have access to three types of filling machine: manual, semi-automatic and automatic. The choice depends on the molecule being packaged and the volumes involved. When filling with a molecule which does not withstand the heat of a terminal sterilisation, the CMO uses an aseptic machine. The filling and closing of the flexible bag via an insertion site or a spike port (twist off, tulip) are therefore entirely automated. Located in an aseptic environment, the risks of particle or microbial contamination are reduced as far as possible.
